Every great journey begins with a story.
Ours began long before Kalayani Safaris was ever imagined.
It began with a man affectionately known as "Kalayani."
Our grandfather, whose nickname would one day inspire our name, believed that serving people was one of life's highest callings. From the 1950s through the 1980s, he worked as the Head Chef at Mount Meru Hospital in Arusha, where he became known not only for the meals he prepared, but for the care, warmth, and dignity with which he served others.
To him, hospitality was never simply about food.
It was about making people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for.
Those values became the foundation of our family.
The Next Generation
The spirit of hospitality did not end with Kalayani.
It lived on through our father, Joel.
Beginning in the 1980s, he dedicated his life to Tanzania's hospitality industry. Over a remarkable career spanning more than five decades, he served guests from around the world with professionalism, humility, and unwavering commitment.
His journey took him from the historic New Arusha Hotel to the renowned River Trees Country Inn, where he continued serving guests until his retirement in 2026.
For more than fifty years, he welcomed travellers, solved problems, created memorable experiences, and demonstrated that true hospitality is found in the smallest details.
As children, we watched him leave for work every day with pride.
We watched him serve with passion.
We watched him treat every guest with respect.
Without realizing it, we were witnessing the values that would one day shape Kalayani Safaris.
It lived on through our father, Joel.
